Onam



Onam is one of the major harvest festivals in Kerala. It is the ten-day traditional festival celebrated by all Malayalies during the beginning month of Chingam in the memories of the homecoming of King Mahabali. This festival commemorates the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu as well as the return of the celebrated Hindu mythological character, Emperor Mahabali. The idols of Gods and Goddesses make their way to the Vadakkunathan Temple on decorated elephants accompanied by Chenda Melam ( Drumbeats) and Pancha Vadyam and include orchestra of five instruments. And the most notable one is Kudamattam where 15 decorated elephants from each side face each other.


Snake Boat Race





Snake boat race or Vallamkali is a traditional boat race and it is the most famous attraction in Kerala. This boat race festival is mainly conducted during the season of the harvest festival of Onam. The best time to visit this Snake Boat Race is from August to October. The first race starts in June and it ends in August. The second race starts in mid-October and finally ends in the middle of November. Viewing this Kerala Vallamkali is a charming situation that one shouldn’t miss out on this boat race.


Theyyam
